2026 Hailed as the Age of the Croaking Craze.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent indie games event was a delight to watch, my main revelation was perhaps unexpected: I am certain that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these leaping protagonists. Considering a collection of frogs is called an army, it seems they are taking over the industry.
From Classic Icons to Modern Mania
Croaking characters are anything but new to the interactive entertainment. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a special place. However, their visibility has markedly surged in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are serious Frog Games.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To grasp this rise, I conducted a thorough analysis into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My methodology was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a steady rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The frog's rising status in the public consciousness is also apparent elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. But, the trend in gaming looks particularly strong.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
In my opinion, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs have inherent creative potential for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are incredibly easy to be designed as endearing characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and grappling abilities facilitate a wide array of creative gameplay ideas.
Several the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the biggest year so far.
Should these games are received positively—and historically, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we could very well be entering a full-blown croaking cultural moment.
