Marnus Labuschagne Omitted from Australian One-Day International Squad Against India
Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from Australia's three-match ODI series against India, as high-performing Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw earning a shock inclusion.
Recent Form Lead to Exclusion
Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the one-day international squad following scoring just one run in both of his innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. He has a highest score of forty-seven in his most recent ten ODI innings.
The batsman has featured in 68 ODIs and accumulated 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64, but will now work towards a Test recall in time for the Ashes beginning in Perth on November 21.
Surprise Inclusion and Team Changes
Recent performances suggest of a resurgence with 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw also hit a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.
Renshaw is in line to make his ODI debut in the forthcoming series against India after previously being selected in an ODI squad in 2022.
He has played 14 Test matches with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also seeking a return to the Test team as Australia look for a answer to their batting top-order problems.
Bowling Returns and Fitness Updates
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after being rested since performing well for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after being concussed in the build-up to Australia’s last 50-over series against South Africa.
Skipper Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he aims to recover from a back injury in time to lead Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Team Announcement Approach and Fixtures
Australia have selected a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the upcoming Ashes series, although Glenn Maxwell will sit out the five-match series due to a wrist problem suffered in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 teams after smashing a century in the last match against New Zealand to seal a two-nil victory last week.
“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the back end of the series as players get ready for the summer through domestic first-class matches,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an important period in the build towards the World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-match ODI series against India commences on 19 October in Perth, before the rivals play five T20 internationals from October 29.
