New York Unveils Portal for Residents to Share ICE Images Following Detentions of Four US Citizens
New York state AG has launched a fresh digital platform encouraging locals to provide photos and videos of ICE operations around the state. This move comes just a shortly after a significant ICE raid rattled Chinatown in Manhattan, prompting large-scale outcry.
US Citizens Held In ICE Operation
A congressional representative announced during a news conference that four American citizens were taken into custody and detained for "almost a full day" after the enforcement action. Demonstrations erupted in New York on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"All New York residents deserves to live without fear," the AG declared in a release.
"For those who saw and documented federal operations yesterday, I urge you to provide that footage with my office. We are committed to examining these submissions and evaluating any violations of law."
Portal Features
The portal offers options to send photos and videos of the operation, plus a section to specify geographic details. When submitting, individuals must check a box that acknowledges that "the attorney general might employ any documents, photographs, or videos in a public document, such as in a legal proceeding or official statement."
Information about the Chinatown Raid
The Manhattan operation, which observers say included over fifty ICE personnel, happened in a well-known district of the city where fake purses, items, goods and merchandise are sold daily in large quantities – often to sightseers.
Footage of the operation show multiple hooded and equipped federal agents restraining and arresting a individual, and forcing aside witnesses. Masses of New Yorkers followed the personnel through the streets. An military-style transport was observed moving along the Manhattan avenues.
Political Response
In a news conference held with the rights organization, congressman Dan Goldman, a lawmaker, announced that four US citizens were taken by federal agents for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where nationals should be taken for without cause." He said the persons were let go on the following day with no accusations made.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not about removing offenders," he stated. "This is a armed campaign to create conflict. It is merely a pretext to incite violence for the government to utilize the troops to halt unrest that they have created."
Extensive Outcry
Fury over the federal action quickly spread – all three NYC mayor hopefuls condemned the raid, as did Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Yet again, the Trump administration opts for authoritarian theatrics that instill panic, not safety. It must stop," a contender declared.
New York City community groups expressed outrage as well.
"Immigration agents descended on Chinatown in NYC with tactical trucks, hooded officers and tactical gear to go after local sellers attempting to earn income. This action had nothing to do with citizen protection and focused completely on frightening communities and communities," said the president of a major immigrant coalition.
