The Creators of Baldur's Gate 3 Explains Its Implementation of AI Tools for Next Project
The studio behind popular role-playing games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin has recently shown its new project, generating a wave of anticipation within the player base. However, subsequent comments from the company's figurehead have added clarity to the narrative, focusing on the team's stance toward AI tools.
A Tool for Ideation, Not Replacement
In a recent clarification, Swen Vincke detailed that the team is using machine learning for certain preliminary tasks. These involve developing PowerPoint slides, creating rough visual ideas, and creating temporary dialogue.
Notably, Vincke emphasized that the shipping content in the game will be created entirely by real writers. "Larian is writing everything manually," he affirmed.
We are actively expanding our team of concept artists and are actively putting together dedicated writer rooms.
Since concept art is being particularly called out — we currently have over twenty concept artists and have positions available for additional creatives.
All our efforts we do is additive and focused on having people spend greater focus on the creative process.
Any ML tool implemented properly is supplementary to a developer's process, not a substitute for their skill.
Responding to Feedback and Defining the Path
The revelation of AI usage originally provoked unease among some the community. In reply, Vincke offered further clarification on public forums.
"At Larian, we employ these tools to gather inspiration, in the same way we use the internet and art books," he stated. "In the initial brainstorming phase we use it as a simple sketch for composition which we then replace with original illustrations."
He noted, "Larian brings on talent for their creative vision, not for their ability to follow what a machine suggests."
Focused Uses for Machine Learning
Vincke had in the past outlined the team's practical strategy to machine learning, categorizing its use into key functions:
- Streamlining Repetitive Work: This encompasses refining animations, voice editing, and Larian-specific work like adjusting assets for various species.
- Accelerated Iteration: Using technology to quickly build basic versions of gameplay ideas to validate concepts ahead of complete production.
- Future Potential for Gameplay: Researching how machine learning could eventually create new forms of gameplay, particularly in simulating unforeseen permutations in a detailed game universe.
He specifically noted that key artistic disciplines — such as visual art — are not areas where the company is reducing human talent. In fact, Larian is expanding its staff in these precise roles.
"Larian is neither launching a game with machine-made assets, and we are certainly not considering cutting teams to swap them out with AI," Vincke stated definitively.
