A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.
A Landmark Comeback to the Australian Courts
Tournament officials confirmed on Friday that the 45-year-old legend will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.
Gearing Up for the Summer Swing
The tennis star had previously revealed in the month of November her intention to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a special entry, a fortnight before the Melbourne event. Organizers added that Williams is scheduled to participate in Australia's Hobart International a following week, immediately prior to the start of play at the main venue.
Her last appearance in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.
"I am thrilled to return in the country and looking forward to competing during the summer season," Venus stated. "I have experienced so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to go back to a venue that has been so significant to my professional journey."

Officials indicated that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to compete in an Australian Open singles competition, eclipsing the record formerly set by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the opening round at the venue in 2015.
